Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

MLD is a gentle and light pressure massage for detoxification and aim to boosts the immune system. It helps to improve the appearance of the skin and reducing puffiness cause by water retention and poor circulation.

There are over 600 lymph nodes in the body, about 160 in the neck region alone. Lymph nodes not only bind, attack and breakdown antigens, but substances are also deposited there which the body cannot get rid of e.g., glass dust , coal dust, mineral dust and dyes.

The Lymph is concentrated, with 40% of its fluid resorbed by blood capillaries.

The Lymphatic Organs
»»Tonsils:
There are many tonsils, apart from the well-known palatine tonsils. They form a ring of lymphatic tissue around the mouth and pharynx - ideally placed to remove noxious matter that would otherwise be ingested or inhaled. They have all the normal constituents of lymph nodes-except that material centers more directly into them (via the mucous membranes, a small amount of interstitial tissue, and possibly, short lymphatics), rather than begin taken up a long way and brought to them via afferent lymphatics.

»»Thymus:
This is much more prominent in children than in adults, and is maximal at puberty. It is a double lobed mass of lymphatic tissue lying at the top and front of the chest cavity, sometimes extending along the trachea. Like the nodes, it has a capsule and trabeculae, between which are group of lymphatic cells (thymic "corpuscles"). Large number of thymic lymphocytes (T-lymphocytes) are made here. They move easily through the loose reticular meshwork in its interior and pass to the blood. These are very important for immunity.

»»Spleen:
This is a peculiar organ, and quite a large one. It undoubtedly contains many lymphocytes growing from the many lymphatic nodules, yes it contains very few true lymph channels and instead contains many very permeable blood sinusoids. It is largely concerned with breaking down old red cells, however it contains the largest mass of lymphatic tissue in the human body.

It also has a fibrous capsule , with trabecular extensions into the organ, but these have smooth muscle in them so that the blood cells it also contains can be rapidly squeezed into the blood if they are needed-an auto - transfusion device. Its stroma is made up of two kinds of tissue: the red and white pulp. The red pulp contains many, very permeable, venous sinuses that let the red cells pass to the many macrophages lying in the tissues. Scattered throughout the red pulp are clusters of lymphoid tissue, called "splenic nodules". These are collections of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and their germ cells. The newly produced lymph cells can easily pass directly into the blood. Hence, the spleen is a lymphatic organ without lymphatics.
